Lindsay M. Harrington, born in Charlottesville, Virginia, has resided in Punta Gorda, Florida for the past 40 years. He earned a B.A. in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, and an M.A. in Human Resource Management from Pepperdine University. He served in the United States Air Force and Air Force Reserves, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.
Lindsay was elected to the Florida House in 1996 and represented District 72, which included Hardee, DeSoto and parts of Charlotte and Lee counties. He was selected to serve as the Speaker Pro Tempore of the Florida House during his 2002-2004 term. While in office, he served on the Policy and Procedures Committee, as well as the Budget Committee, and was Chairman of the Ethics & Elections Subcommittee.
During his time in the Legislature, he received numerous awards including: Legislator of the Year from the Florida School Board Association, American Heart Association Legislator of the Year, State of Florida Correctional Law Enforcement Officers Legislator of the Year, and the Guardian of Small Business award from the National Federation of Independent Business.
He was also recognized by the Florida Marine Industries Association as a “Friend of the Industry,” and awarded the First “Keeper of the Watch” award by Standing Watch (a statewide boating coalition), and received the 2002 Outstanding House Member for the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Florida.
In 2003, he was appointed to serve on the Help America Vote Act Planning Committee to represent the Florida House of Representatives, and also served on the Governor’s Task Force on Election Procedures, Standards and Technology.
Prior to his service in the Florida House, Lindsay was elected to the Punta Gorda city council in 1988 and served until 1996. He served as Vice Mayor from 1991-1994 and was elected Mayor in 1995. He also served as Chairman of the Charlotte County Republican Party from 1988-1994. He was a member of the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council and the Charlotte County Economic Development Council.
Lindsay is a Graduate of the Realtors Institute and a successful Realtor in the southwest Florida area. He is the past Director of the Punta Gorda-Port Charlotte-North Port Association of Realtors, and also served as President of the Charlotte County 4-H Foundation. He currently serves as the Charlotte Director of the DeSoto-Charlotte Farm Bureau.
Additionally, Lindsay was the founding Chairman of the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce, Business and Economic Development Group, and he remains an active member and director of the Royal Order of Ponce De Leon Conquistadors which annually commemorates the discovery of Florida in 1513.
Lindsay is married to Deborah Lynn and they have four children and five grandchildren.
