Balanced Federalism
State Sovereignty
Representative Governance
The National Association of Former State Legislators honors those who served in state legislatures and provides a venue for them to connect, build relationships, and continue to serve.
We believe former state legislators are important defenders of the U.S. Constitution’s system of balanced federalism, which protects both state sovereignty and representative governance. With their relationships and institutional knowledge, former legislators are an important resource for current elected officials. This is particularly true for newly elected officials and in states with term limits.
NAFSL is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for former state legislators (current legislators are also welcome). Financial support comes from dues, events, donations (from corporations and individuals), and foundation grants. The NAFSL is the largest network of former state legislators in the country.
